“jolt” to you. This process is a starter to your organization that can launch your new purging mindset. You can then proceed with the unstuffed tasks listed later in this book. It will produce a striking change.

Set Stringent Boundaries

Some years back, I read a blog and was motivated by one of the posts on closet arrangement. In the post, the writer discussed her thin hangers and the extent of her love for them. In that instant, I decided that the way out of my closet clutter was better hanger. On reaching the store, it didn't take long to discover that changing all the 300 hangers or thereabout in my closet would cost me a lot. Hence, I bought a box that contained sixty hangers and came up with a different plan. Instead of buying new costly hangers to hang clothes that I wasn't sure I liked and which were mostly old and out of style, I would instead purge my wardrobe to accommodate only sixty clothing pieces that I loved the most. In any case, there is no sense in keeping clothes that I haven’t worn in ages.

So, I set about my task, and worked through my entire closet, keeping just the clothes that were beautiful, fitting, accentuated my figure and skin tone, made me feel pretty. Strangely, it wasn't challenging to categorize the clothes and select the ones that went back into my closet and the ones I wanted to discard; just a few pieces were in the "not sure" heap. When I had a stringent restriction, I realized that setting priorities and clearing was much simpler. I knew in an instant the things I adored and the ones I can let go.

The change was immediate and staggering. Though my closet is now about one-quarter of its initial size, it felt bigger and more spacious. The frustration and the feeling of having nothing to wear changed to delight and the sense of having to choose from an array of beautiful options. Do you know the most delightful part of the process? It was easy to maintain it in a neat and organized fashion.

When I was scared of discarding so many clothes at a time, I boxed the remaining ones left after selecting my favorites and put them in a garage. After a few months, I didn't miss any cloth from the pile. I was more content with what I have. Now, whenever I want to buy something, I know that space will have to be made for the incoming piece of cloth. The restriction the sixty hanger places on me forces me to be very picky; it was easier to walk past a blouse on the sales rack because I didn't want to let go of another skirt in my closet. All future acquisitions were subjected to strict yardsticks, saving a lot of time, money, and stress.

The message flying around these days is that you should not be content. No matter how much you have, you should endeavor to have more; every television show, magazine, screams this message.
